Breathing Space into Midlife
We breathe all day without thinking about it. But when we bring our attention to the breath, something shifts.
The breath gives us a way to pause and return to the present moment—to notice the body, soften some of the tension we're carrying, and create a little space between where we've been and whatever comes next.
In yoga, intentional breathing practices are called pranayama. There are many techniques, but a breathing practice doesn't need to be complicated to be meaningful. Sometimes simply slowing down and noticing the breath is enough.
Try this
Find a comfortable position and allow your shoulders to soften.
Notice your natural breath for a few moments without trying to change it.
Then begin gently lengthening your exhale—breathing in comfortably and allowing the breath out to become a little slower and longer.
Continue for a few minutes.
No need to force the breath or get it exactly right. Simply notice what changes as you give your attention to breathing.
When you're ready, return to your natural breath and pause before moving on with your day.
A few intentional breaths won't change everything happening around you. But they can change the space from which you meet it.
